bizarre finder icon preview glitch
one of the islanders tumblrs recently posted a pretty cool looking photo of matt martin and zenon konopka on the islanders bench. they’d edited the image so that everything was black and white except for the islanders logo on their helmets:
but up to a certain threshold, the finder will render the icon preview in full color:
the threshold seems to be 188/192 for the icon size. 188 or smaller and it’s in color. 192 or higher and it’s in black and white. i made a quick little video of this happening. i’m not sure where the finder is pulling the color version from. it’s a .jpg, so it’s not as though it’s saved at multiple sizes. granted, my knowledge of the inner workings of JPEG compression isn’t all that comprehensive. still, it seems to me that the color data has to still be within the image somewhere.
